Executive Director Job Description

The Laurel Redevelopment Corporation (LRC) https://www.laurelredevelopment.com/ is an established nonprofit focused on economic development and community revitalization in downtown Laurel, DE. We are seeking an experienced, entrepreneurial and visionary leader to serve as Executive Director, overseeing daily operations, financial management and development, property redevelopment, stakeholder relations and the passion to help LRC evolve to meet the changing demands of the community.


Key Responsibilities

Strategic Leadership: Develop and implement strategies articulated in the strategic plan and the capacity to anticipate, prepare and adapt the LRC for change.

Oversee all financial activities, including annual budget preparation, monitoring, and reporting; ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting practices

  • Lead fundraising efforts and secure federal, state, private, and foundation grants to advance LRC programs
  • Advise the Board of Directors on programmatic priorities; develop, implement, and track the annual work plan in line with the strategic plan
  • Serve as principal spokesperson; deliver presentations and manage traditional and social media outreach and community engagement strategies.
  • Manage leasing, rent collection, maintenance, and security for all LRC properties
  • Identify, acquire, and redevelop blighted or under-utilized properties in Laurel’s downtown commercial corridor
  • Cultivate strong professional relationships with State, County, and Town officials and community partners (e.g., Laurel Historical Society, Delaware DOT, Habitat for Humanity)
  • Supervise project development phases for initiatives like The Ramble riverwalk
  • Oversee day-to-day office operations
  • Represent LRC at special events and perform related duties as required

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor’s degree in relevant fields such as business administration, marketing, planning, or public administration is preferred.
  • Experience: Several years of experience in a related field, including non-profit management, community development, commercial district management or business/real estate development.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, database, and presentation software; familiarity with web and social media platforms; proven skill in drafting and negotiating rental agreements; excellent report writing and Board presentation capabilities.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong communication, public relations, and networking skills to build relationships and influence people to work together.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of issues facing downtown businesses, property owners, and public agencies, sensitivity to design, economic and community development principles.
  • Other Attributes: Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently and meet deadlines Ability to work evenings and weekends, lead and motivate volunteers, stay upbeat, and focus on the overall goals of the LRC and community.

Salary Range

$70,000 – $90,000 and health benefit stipend annually commensurate with experience and qualifications.

This initiative is part of a broader economic redevelopment plan aimed at transforming the town into a vibrant hub of activity and growth.

A key highlight of the LRC’s efforts is the rehabilitation of older properties, breathing new life into historic buildings. One such property is the former A&K Enterprises building located on Central Avenue, now rebranded as Central Station. This iconic building will soon welcome its new tenant, Davelli’s Bagel Cafe, offering residents and visitors a delightful new dining option. The transformation of Central Station underscores the LRC’s commitment to preserving Laurel’s heritage while fostering economic development.

Jeff Pruitt and Karen Schreiber said, “Expanding Davelli’s to Laurel, our hometown, will open up new opportunities to bring a fresh breakfast & lunch experience to the community, offering a variety of options such as bagels, sandwiches, salads, and more. We are excited for the opportunity to work closely with the Laurel Redevelopment Corporation on this new venture.”

In addition to Central Station, the LRC has successfully cleaned up the vacant Thompson lot, a former brownfields site, paving the way for new business opportunities. Sweet Brew, a specialty coffee business operating out of a food truck, has set up shop on this revitalized lot. This innovative venture not only provides high-quality coffee to the community but also exemplifies the creative use of previously underutilized spaces.

Jenna and Patty Procino, owners/operators of Sweet Brew, expressed appreciation for the chance to bring their business that offers high quality coffee, lattes & energy drinks to Laurel. “Opening Sweet Brew in Laurel has given us the opportunity to not only offer these products, but to bring a smile to each & every customer, whether they live locally or are just passing through!”

The introduction of Davelli’s Bagel Cafe and Sweet Brew brings exciting new food and drink options to Laurel’s residents. These establishments are expected to become popular gathering spots, enhancing the town’s social fabric and providing a boost to the local economy. The LRC’s efforts are creating a ripple effect, encouraging further investment and development in the area.

The creation of new businesses like Davelli’s Bagel Cafe and Sweet Brew is also generating much-needed jobs in Laurel.
